The boys varsity volleyball team defeated the Montebello Oilers on Tuesday, April 14, to improve their Almont League record to 3-1.

The Aztecs entered the game against the Oilers coming off two consecutive victories against Schurr and Alhambra after starting the season with a loss to Bell Gardens. The Aztecs carried their momentum into the first set, which they won easily with a score of 25-16.

The second set, however, was a closer one which Montebello was able to take with a score of 21-25. With the sets tied up, the Aztecs came together to sweep the next two sets with scores of 25-13 and 25-10. They took advantage of their consistent passing and their hitters’ aggressiveness, winning the game with three sets to Montebello’s one.

Following the Aztecs’ victory, Coach Francis Chu said, “We played well, overall. We minimized our errors and…we maintained our focus throughout the game”.

Junior Timothy Tran added, “Though we executed well, we could definitely communicate more on defense and react to the ball more quickly.”

This season, the Aztecs have jumped to a fast start, winning 3 of their first 4 league games (10-5 overall), following a season in which the team went 0-10. Chu attributes his team’s turnaround to the experience gained by the players from last season.

“We improved in toughness and discipline,” he said. “When we’re at full speed, we’re a pretty solid team.” Though it is still early in the season, the team is in a good position to compete for a league title or a CIF berth. They trail only the undefeated San Gabriel Matadors, who the Aztecs will play on April 16. Tran, however, does not want the team to get ahead of itself, saying, “We can’t let this get into our heads. Our approach is to keep working hard.”
